Super Black

A veteran of Kingston’s Dancehall scene of the 1980s, Super Black was born Howard Anthony Black. His first foray into music came as a member of fellow singer, Little john’s Romantic Hi Fi. Also featuring the likes of Conrod Cystal, Singing Melody, El fego Barca, Squiddley & Boom Dandimite the sound system gained a strong following with a weekly Thursday night residency in the Mckoy Lane area of Jamaica’s capital.

Journeying to the famed Waterhouse district of Kingston he recorded for King Tubbys but scored hits with Tubbys former protégé King Jammys. The latter’s ground-breaking label and sound system at the time boasted names like Echo Minnot, Half Pint. Anthony Johnson, King Everald, Pad Anthony, Wayne Smith , Tullo T, Pampidoo, Admiral Bailey & The Colonel, Josey Wales.

After serving his apprenticeship on the Jammys Sound System it was time to head into the studio where he would record singles like ‘Love Sick’, ‘Bubbling Time’, ‘One Time Girl Friend’ and the certified monster – ‘Deh Wid Yuh’. It was this monster that propelled Super Black to hit the international circuit where he would perform in places like the USA, Canada, and the Cayman Islands.

Since his 1980s heyday Super Black freelanced for various producers and released music on his own house and land label. He can still be found around the studios of Kingston as he is still in demand of Dubplates and sound Clashes.
